Academic Fellowship
To sit for the Academic Fellowship Exam, you must apply prior to the deadlines having met all the qualifications. Applications and payment of $300 USD must be received by the Academy office thirty days prior to the Annual Meeting (Application deadline March 30, 2020, for the 2020 exam). Applications will not be accepted after this deadline.

Academic Affiliate Fellowship
Academic Affiliate Fellow is a new fellowship for AAOM. AAOM understands the future of oral medicine rests with a variety of healthcare practitioners spread across a variety of healthcare disciplines. AAOM is encouraging collaboration among practitioners to expand patient access to oral medicine care.
AAOM is proud to announce the implementation of the Affiliate Fellowship in conjunction with its initiative, The Future of Oral Medicine. Now a variety of healthcare practitioners can join the ranks of other AAOM Fellows in being recognized as attaining the highly respected and sought-after credential of Fellowship.
The Affiliate Fellowship can be obtained by holding Affiliate membership with AAOM and passing the AAOM Affiliate Fellowship examination which is given once a year at the AAOM Annual Conference.

Academic Fellow
Academic Fellow status in the American Academy of Oral Medicine is a highly respected and sought-after credential for Oral Medicine practitioners who demonstrate proficiency in diagnosis and management of oral mucosal diseases, difficult oral/dental diagnoses, orofacial pain, and dental management of medically complex patients. Fellowship encourages practitioners to pursue higher levels of knowledge and skill in the practice of Oral Medicine.
AAOM offers two types of Fellowship, Academic and Academic Affiliate Fellowship.
Regular members of AAOM are eligible to sit for the Academic Fellowship exam if they meet the qualifications below. Regular members are defined as graduates of accredited dental or medical schools in any country.
Those who wish to pursue the Academic Fellowship credential in AAOM must demonstrate their qualifications by:
- Maintaining membership as a Regular member in the American Academy of Oral medicine for at least one year prior to sitting for the examination.
- Attending at least two Annual Meetings, one of which may be the year the examination is taken.
- Demonstrating proficiency in Oral medicine through teaching oral medicine, a residency program, hospital affiliation, oral medicine publications, and continuing education courses in oral medicine.
- Submission of an application form and a curriculum vitae that provide documentation of the above. Payment of $300 is required at time of application.
- Successfully complete a written examination, given each year at the Annual Meeting.

The Affiliate Fellowship can be obtained by holding Affiliate membership with AAOM and passing the AAOM Affiliate Fellowship examination which is given once a year at the AAOM Annual Conference. Affiliate Membership is a non-dentist holding a doctoral degree or a professional degree in dental hygiene or any other related healthcare discipline. These individuals are typically involved in teaching, research or practice in oral medicine and not otherwise eligible for another category of membership.
The next exam is scheduled for April 2020 at the AAOM Conference in Orlando, Florida. Those who wish to pursue the Affiliate Fellowship credential with AAOM must demonstrate their qualifications by:
- Securing and maintaining Affiliate membership for one-year in the American Academy of Oral medicine prior to sitting for the examination.
- Attending at least two annual meetings over the course of two years, one of which may be the year the examination is taken. View the practice exam.
- Demonstrating proficiency in oral medicine through teaching oral medicine, a residency program, hospital affiliation, oral medicine publications, and continuing education courses in oral medicine.
- Submission of an application form and a curriculum vitae that provide documentation of the above.
